Tiger Tiger Durban

Tiger Tiger Durban
Submitted by capdog on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 14:07

The following article is a tale of violence and brutality at one of Durban's supposed 'flagship nightclubs', by the people who go there, the bouncers and now even the police. Please add your own story as a comment at the end.

Let's start with the narcotic cops, who last Friday raided three clubs in the greater Durban area, including Tiger Tiger, in what was an extremely violent affair.

Underage girls? Fuck them all up, that'll teach 'em!

For some reason, the SAPS members felt it necessary to hit girls to the ground, kicking them and pointing automatic rifles at their heads. A number of patrons even had to be treated by Netcare 911 after the police had swept through.

Even more ridiculous than the actions of the police, was the reason for them being there in the first place. Apparently, they had received complaints from the public that underage kids were going there, and that drugs were being used on the premises.

Drugs. At Tiger Tiger.

It's almost farcical it's so ridiculous. Any old fool who's done a few rounds of clubbing in Durban would confidently be able to pick at least two other venues that thrive on the drug trade, for example 330 and Tilt. There are probably many that I have never been to.

What are these cops doing? Does anyone else smell a rat in this system? How much did 330 have to pay off the police, in order to stay open for so long, flagrantly breaking every substance control act ever passed in parliament?

If it's the bouncers that are involved in the drug syndicates, as indicated by Mike Bolhuis in 2004 (see article link at bottom of page), then what good does beating up the customers of the club do? Just arrest the bloody bouncers!

Corruption abounds in this city, and it's a obvious that the drug syndicates and police are deep in each other's pants protecting their respective business interests.

Where are the Scorpions when we need them?

Although, karma is a bitch...

While I am outraged at the sorry state of the policing in Durban, I do feel a smug sense of satisfaction knowing that a couple of meat-headed bouncers and jocks got a taste of their own medicine on Friday night.

For once, they were the ones that received a solid beating, although it probably paled in comparison to the amount of trauma they have inflicted on other poor unsuspecting visitors to Tiger Tiger.

The most recent story I've heard about the brutality of the Tiger patrons was a racist attack against a black guy, son of an MP and prefect at his school, by a couple of guys who waited in the car park for him with broken bottles. He lost an eye.

There was another incident involving a close friend of mine who was badly beaten by a patron of the club while the bouncer watched. They settled out of court, and I can't legally discuss that one unfortunately.

A bit of digging on Google revealed that even the New Zealand cricket players got thrashed by jocks at Tiger.

These are just the tip of the iceberg, I could go on with thousands of stories of violence and senseless attacks at Tiger, some less serious, some close to fatal - which either involve the bouncers, or that they allow to continue.

There are other clubs too which are renowned for violence, but none so much as this particular place. They could easily remedy the problem by simply getting rid of all the ego and arrogance, and coming down hard on the violent people who obviously ruin this club's reputation, but still continue to get away with it, seemingly in a manner endorsed by the bouncers.

Until they sort it out, my recommendation is to stay far, far away from this club. Do not go there, not now, not tomorrow, not ever. There are many superior alternatives in Durban.

in true rocky style, a beat down to clip the tiger's claw was in effect...

hmmm, i could blag a major commentary here, about all thats wrong in the Durban entertainment/nightlife/clubbing world, the continueing extremely racially divided scenes and the problem with middle class mainly whitey youth and underage drink/drug/promiscuity issues, lack of parental control/family values and the shredding apart of social fabric, blah blah ...

my first reaction when i read about the raid in the Tribune, is that it was directly influenced by a backlash in political circles for the MP son's incident.
Ie the aggressive approach and assaults where in essence a message, you think your posse is tough, well ours is tougher and we can hit you anytime legally .

I think the rough up tactics were used on purpose in a kind of "shock and awe" move to create fear and scare off the punters...

Excellent point, it very well may have been... although they did hit another two places at the same time. Maybe they weren't as rough at the other two.

hmmm, i also think that if you look at the strategic approach of such a raid:

do you customise the approach - ie this is soft cock [sic] tiger tiger - no one will be on Ketamine or speed etc or other amphetamines, so we should be gentler in our approach, no one should be packing cause its underage rich suburban whiteys ?

if you look at the spectrum of "nightclubs" , there are some pretty hardcore places, and if the punters are wired and or armed they could hit back at the cops, and things could get really nasty

i would say from the perspective of this task force that did the raid, they probably acted within their strategic protocols, but for the normal partygoer at tiger, this may have seemed pretty hectic and rough.

i can just picture some teenage poppie, spoilt mammas girl tuning one of the cops - hey pal this is gucci, no way am i crawling in the filth for you, only to be forced to the ground a second later...

hey i wasnt there, i dunno, its all guesswork, but just think from the law enforcement side, if they dont want any accusations of kickbacks, favouritism or racism in their approach, they have to raid consistently - again would be interesting to hear what went down at the other raids...

again to raise the "race" card - was it because "whiteys" were involved and reacted as if it was a travesty of rights - feeling that they somehow are superior in their middle class suburban plushness?
why didnt we hear similar tales of "brutality" from the other raids, that [i may be mistaken] would be at clubs frequented by non-whitey brothers and sisters ?

They did what? They waited in the parking lot for the o and then nailed him with broken bottles, taking an eye out? What kind of fucknut lowlife scum are these, living in the fukn Middle Ages? These o's, whoever they are, have got a litre of sulphuric acid for each eye waiting for them behind door number 1 on the big Karma game show in the sky.
As for the Law and bouncers, eish...cut from similar cloth, they are. That said, there are guys who just want to (and do) do their jobs politely and professionally. But I guess they're in the minority. Screw clubs anyway. Turns out the MP3/FM player I got off Oz broadcasts to other car stereo's so if ya wanna jol, my guzzy, you just bang a tunes on and other china's tune in and theresit, china - car laager jol! That's the way of the future...no bouncer monkeys either, so take that, julle naaiers!

They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel, a boutique
And a swinging hot spot
Dont it always seem to go
That you dont know what youve got
Till its gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

They took all the trees
Put em in a tree museum
And they charged the people
A dollar and a half just to see em
Dont it always seem to go
That you dont know what youve got
Till its gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Hey farmer farmer
Put away that d.d.t. now
Give me spots on my apples
But leave me the birds and the bees
Please!
Dont it always seem to go
That you dont know what youve got
Till its gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Late last night
I heard the screen door slam
And a big yellow taxi
Took away my old man
Dont it always seem to go
That you dont know what youve got
Till its gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Looks like the media have picked up the connection too - at the end of this article (which was front page of today's Daily News)

They insist there was no link... ya right.

I wish cops would swoop in on murderers and rapists, and brutalise them for a change.

"All the raids came after complaints from the public about drugs and the misuse of alcohol."

Yeah i would complain if my kid was beaten up and severely injured by beer/liquor bottles - if thats not a misuse of alcohol then I dont know what is...

So from that IOL article we can gather the following:
- That alcohol and drugs are 'misused' in clubs. Fucking hell, that's a groundbreaking discovery, that.
- That the police reckon pointing guns in the faces of harmless drunk lighties is 'necessary force'. Shitsake, what next? Innocent people locked up and crims going free?
Anyone would think we were in Africa!

Gotta give the clueless masses of lighties somewhere to go otherwise they might start a rebellion, demand the right to plunging necklines, micro-mini's, spiky hair, warm Black Label and fights in the car park for all underage drinkers...could get messy. They're welcome to it. although I can't help thinking that it would be better if they brought back ye olde Panda Inn...damn I loved those curry chip chows...

Hey every1 , Ya i was at 'Tiger Tiger' on the night of the raid.
And alot of these rumers you talked about.

Police entered the club with battens and guns in hand,Pointing and shouting at people to get down on the ground..And of course the music was loud and many people did not hear the police at all and where forced/beaten to the ground..By the time the DJ had switched off the music almost every1 was on the ground....can you imagin,,a those poor people on that packed dance floor trying to all lay down....quit a site i must tell you...

After this each person was searched and then sent outside,,,on the way outside each person also had their finger print scanned to check there age....Unlucky for all those under age people who cant use that age old excuss 'Um i dont have my ID on me' anymore.....lol.

Anyway this whole process took about an hour, afterwards we where all aloud back inside.

Anyway , another problem is that the police came in so fast and with barely no identification except for the letters S.A.P in small writing on there very worn bullet proof vests.
My point here is that unless you where being very observent , in these poor lighting conditions,u never would have known that this was a police raid and most lightley panniced , which alot of people did , which in tern forced police into attacking and forcing those individuals to the ground...Which is most lightley the reason for all the injureys.

Another thing is that Police said they will also be investigating Tigers for overcrowding,,what the hell,,,as if no other club ever gets full on a pumping night.

As for the reason for this raid,i heard that the owner repoted seeing the use of drugs at Tiger Tiger.Which seems highley unlightley.Im also sure that the MP son's incident had a roll to play in this raid.

Anyway as dysan1 said the closing night is this Friday the 19.th of January.

And just as Capdog said the owner of Tiger Tiger now ownes Joe Cools.
Which now has an age restriction of---Guys over 24----girls over 22
Iv gota see how long that lasts, considering most of the people that went to Joe's and Tiger where under those ages.

Anyway.....Chat soon every1.

Eish, where have all the good jols gone? Mind you, am rather enjoying houseparties, at least you don't have to put up with any of the crap you get at clubs, and you get to hear the tunes you like, hang with the crew you like and can wear whatever you smaak. So screw 'em. And it's wayyy cheaper and you can pass out at your maties place if you're too wankered to walk or drive.
That said, General Midi on Saturday nite is gonna be fun...

one time fully for sure bru

and actually although for some people it may seem kakka...

the recent actions could +vely impact the undeground sounds again, already there are rumours of some organisers coming out of retirement to throw it down again, and fill the much needed gaps

It goes like this in waves, if my experience over the last almost 2 decades is anything to go by, clubs/mainstream dominate for a while, then the "underground" /independent party scene kicks back

really hope this year sees alot more action, it built up nicely towards end of last year,"wild things are" , "estate agents at point yacht club" + many more, panama room now being used for non- mainstream events, hmmm, lets see where this takes us...james bond style...

peace

Best bet is to keep your eyes peeled for gig info on this site, or follow the flyers put out by Trip Hazard Productions, or the other crews that do 'underground' gigs. There are also a range of places and organisers who do more mainstream gigs such as Tilt and Durban Underground / Mr White. When all else fails go to Idols in Musgrave and pick up some flyers, most promoters leave stuff there.

WTF is going on with durban these days??? Crazy stuff. I was there week before Christmas. Went to the "new Joe's" for lunch. Was served by a bit of a "look me up and down" waitress in her slinky blue dress, who did not look over 23 to me....it was super hot.

I was watching a few customers walking in. A group of random guys missioned up the stairs....shirts off...etc. They got to the top and were kindly asked to "put their shirts on"
I felt a bit blind for them, really.

Anyway, my point is, is that Durban has such a small amount of night life, why, why, are people trying to destroy it? I dont know the right words to use, but i am sure you understand what I am saying?

Club violence is bad, swak, miff.....

I am prob totally off the point here

With reference to the recent reports, an under -18 girl being shot outside a "club" in Overport, and other problem areas in club land identified:

Durban night life drastically curbed

Seven Durban nightclubs - some described as "ticking timebombs waiting for a disaster to happen" - have been closed by police.

During the massive Saturday night/Sunday morning operation, 10 patrons were arrested for being wanted in connection with a variety of offences.

The seven clubs - Lord Nelson, Charcoal Haven, Pink House, 007, Chills, African Paradise, Waterfront - situated in Smith Street, West Street and Point Road - will remain closed indefinitely.

Dees Sooknunan, chief licensing inspector for the eThekwini municipality, on Monday said some of the clubs were not licensed and "should not be operational at all".

"All seven clubs will remain closed as they have been issued with closure orders," he said.

While police were busy with the raids in the city centre, 16-year-old Roxanne Upfold was shot by a stray bullet outside an under-18 nightclub, Refresh, at the Overport shopping centre.

Police spokesperson Supt Muzi Mngomezulu said the shooting occurred after security guards intervened in a brawl between a group of youngsters.

Mngomezulu said after one of the security guards chased the brawlers away, they turned on him and assaulted him.

A guard then fired two shots at the youngsters. One of the bullets hit Upfold in her thigh.

Speaking about the CBD club raids, Sooknunan said numerous complaints from the public prompted the raid by the staff of the Point Police Station.

They were accompanied by officials from Metro Police, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), licensing authorities, the Fire Department, officials from Safer Cities, the Organised Crime Unit and the community's policing forum. Seven owners and some managers were arrested and taken to Point Police Station.
