ThunderHEAD Developmental Comedy

ThunderHEAD Developmental Comedy
Submitted by capdog on Monday, July 2, 2007 - 20:39

Great respect to Glen Bo, who has managed to inspire a bunch of rebel up-and-coming Durban comedians into creating an awesome night of entertainment. Kudos too, for persuading a gorgeous little chick from the audience to "get her tits out for the lads"! All in the name of good comedy, after all.

Being a developmental club means there will always be a few jokes from the amateurs that fall flat, however the overall package was far above average on the list of fun things to do on a Thursday night. In fact, it's pretty much at the top.

The idea of ThunderHEAD is to create an environment where stand-up comedy can be nurtured; hopefully until our local talent becomes a national force to be reckoned with.

Glen Bo, being the man with the experience and by far the most accomplished and confident jokester, leads the night with a mixture of his old and new material. It was a bit annoying for me having to sit through the Japanese businessman joke for the third time this year, but it's par for the course I guess: there's no way I'd expect musicians to create completely fresh songs every time they gig, and the same standard has to be applied to comedy. This stuff isn't easy to create, I know because I try and fail with regular occurrence!

In keeping with my mood of late, I've compiled a few highlights from Glen & Co into a video package. Lurking in there too somewhere is a clip of the indecency described above. Enjoy!

Of the up-and-coming stars, lil'Paul was my favorite act. He had great chirps during the improverts (improvised comedy) section that gave me the feeling that he was authentic - a genuinely funny, off-the-cuff kinda guy. His routine was also very natural and relaxed, but deeply amusing at the same time.

It's probably a bit rude to heckel at developing comedians, but if one guy deserved it it was the gay man who's act consisted of little more than proclaiming again and again:

"I'm gay and lewd, isn't that hilarious?!"

Ummm, not really.

Still, the entire package was an absolute pleasure. You're guaranteed to have a smile on your face the whole way, as it's impossible to not get caught up in the atmosphere when everyone around is killing themselves laughing. For that, a night at ThunderHEAD is highly recommended.

Is Glen Botha (Bo) still doing his best of SA comedians material, like he was in the UK or is he actually writing his own stuff now?

Bru ask him on Myspace... original stuff as far as I know, most of the show is very topical so I don't see how it can be "best of"!

Couldn't agree with Capdog more, fact that he hosts a monthly club and it's always new "topical" and somewhat "biographical" how could it be best of?

In regards to what he has done in London, I have seen him at SA Day in London and at other clubs when we where living there. When we moved back we saw him and some comics at the Playhouse, East Coast gig, all original.. of the comics I and my girlfriend have seen and know of in CPT and JHB and various DVD's out there now, it's all his own material...lol

IF you want to point that finger, one should look at many in the SA market, cause there are some blatant guys stealing out there..., from Barry to younger acts

In regards to "best of" and you referring to him as Glen Botha, you obviously know him personally, tisk tisk. The irony of course is that when he was a younger, and less experienced act he changed a "bit" from a well known SA comic at a London pub one night...Joe Parker was in the audience and well he never did that again...it's funny cause he tells the story on stage, seen it...quite amusing.

If you have doubts come down and watch, judge for yourself...theres a bit on youtube too posted by durbanscouts.. unless he made up that he was in Richards Bay, but don't think so...

Trev.
