There is a company in South Africa that has done more damage to the economy than anything else - a government owned entity with a monopoly over telecoms and a hell-bent desire to fleece citizens; while simultaneously posting record profits and lining the pockets of it's BEE investors. Guess who? Telkom of course. Until now, there has been little public activism, but that's changing on Friday, when we will publish a full-page advert in the Mail & Guardian denouncing Telkom's demonopoly.
By "we", I mean the Telecoms Action Group (www.tag.org.za), who have devised this plan based on the successful "Spread Firefox" campaign in the United States. With money raised solely from donations, the American campaign took out a double page spread in the New York Times, urging people to try the free "Firefox" web browser. It was a huge success.
For the last few months, the TAG non-profit organisation has collected R60 000 in donations from the public (durbanscouts.za.net has contributed R200), and will now be purchasing the once-off advertising space in this national newspaper.
The aim is to educate people on how Telkom, aided by the government and ICASA, has chained the IT economy to the ground with it's exorbitant prices and poor service.
The advert itself has not been released, in order to keep it secret from Telkom who may attempt a rebuttal in the same issue of the newspaper. I'm sure the content will be scathing and highly appropriate!
Even this humble website is managed using a GPRS connection on a cellphone! Broadband is just not an affordable option to the average person, something that is unacceptable in a developing nation that needs all the connectivity it can get!
Since I believe this affects every one of us, I urge you to buy a copy of Friday's Mail & Guardian, and show the advert to all your friends and family. We need to take a stand against this bullshit!
