Great respect to Glen Bo, who has managed to inspire a bunch of rebel up-and-coming Durban comedians into creating an awesome night of entertainment. Kudos too, for persuading a gorgeous little chick from the audience to "get her tits out for the lads"! All in the name of good comedy, after all.
Being a developmental club means there will always be a few jokes from the amateurs that fall flat, however the overall package was far above average on the list of fun things to do on a Thursday night. In fact, it's pretty much at the top.
Alcoholic ginger beer? Why, that's just crazy enough to work! Here are two more blast-from-the-past circa '98 flyers for your nostalgic enjoyment. Pretty random, but fun anyway.
So my friends and I were denied entry to a rather empty-looking Society this last Saturday night, because for some reason they have decided to implement a selective dress code. If you're not wearing long pants, your money ain't good enough for them these days I'm afraid.
The following article is a tale of violence and brutality at one of Durban's supposed 'flagship nightclubs', by the people who go there, the bouncers and now even the police. Please add your own story as a comment at the end.
Remember this place! Yes you do, don't lie, everyone used to go there. Your selective amnesia won't fool me – and besides... it wasn't that bad. Sure the entire image of the club was based on a forgery of Gary Larson's cartoon “The Far Side”, but if we were deducting points for lack of originality, most clubs in Durban would fail dismally.
Here's an article on Burn that I did for a brand new magazine, Fusion. The first issue is out in September, and it's free from a number of selected fashion outlets. Keep a look out!
All this talk of house music has reminded me of a very special club that once thrived in Durban, and will always have a place in my heart. Yes, the one and only, it's Crash nightclub.
Situated in The Blue Heights Centre, Westville, Eleven nightclub was the successor to the very popular Private Universe under 18 club. The layout was very similar, and the crowd almost identical.
One of my good friends is getting married this week, so we had the traditional bull's party last Saturday night. As with all bachelor parties, the Bull should be taunted mercilessly by beautiful, naked women that symbolise the lifestyle he's chosen to give up, in favour of spending the rest of his days with the one he loves.
The Sex PistolsBurn wasn't too busy on Saturday, probably due to people being a bit burnt out from the concert. Still, there were some great acts with The Sex Pistols taking on Muse and Tool for a spot in the finals.
Ok for those of you who don't know yet, EX-Grind Rod Muse has changed it's name once AGAIN! Sorry ladies and gentlemen, but A NEW MACHINE just.... well... WE did not like it. So our new name is.... (drum roll)... Dopescape Suicide. Why would anyone want to call a band that you ask, well... because WE like it. The meaning of the name applies to us and I am pretty sure a lot of other people (to escape one's own reality through latching onto obsessions). Anyway, come and catch us, Tenance and the much awaited Chief Rebel Angel at the Winston on the 10th of March. This will be Chief Rebel Angel's debut gig.
On Saturday night we went to Burn for round 6 of the “Battle of the Tributes" competition. It was a classic night at the 'ol favorite, with temperatures in the high 30's and cheap shooters flowing like molasses off a duck's back.
