Just back from Society’s Wednesday Jam Session, and lemme tell ya, it was smoking tonight! Three groups played, all guitar-based lyrically strong tunes with consciousness and upliftment as themes.

Love Jones, Big Idea, yummy Sushi... and Durban venues pushing live music... good times are here again. Here's a quick speech and few pics from around town these past few days.

Dust off your smart shoes, cos we’re going to the symphony!

A couple of months ago, on my way back from the beach, I got a call about some Brazilian group called Napalma performing at the old Glass Magic premises in Windermere Road. The rumble in my stomach was begging me to go home and get some food, but something inside told me I'd be sorry. So, for once I followed my head instead of my hunger, to a show that almost brought the house down (literally).

Thanks to our resident insider T., we'll be able to track the progress of Durban's own beach rock 'n punk band, The City Bowl Mizers, as they make themselves heard in London!

A great new band to check out is 'Timothy Leary Is Innocent'. I caught their act this last weekend at Chiltern, and I was very impressed.

These guys had an absolutely brilliant gig at Chiltern on Saturday night, despite the “Hula Boogie"? dress-up part of the evening being a bit poorly represented. In retrospect, maybe it was a bit silly to throw a Hawaiian beachwear dress-up on a freezing night in Durban. The most we could manage was a few laurels around the neck and a floral shirt or two... and who could blame us?

Durban event promotion was lacking once again, and I heard about Friday’s gig at Society by reading a post on a Cape Town based blog, 2oceansvibe. Now I see this as a major problem, we shouldn’t have to get local event information from a guy two thousand kilometers away! Press about great shows needs to be forthcoming; else bands are not going to make an effort to play here! Well don’t worry, durbanscouts.za.net has a plan brewing. Stay tuned.
