If you've been round to The Pavilion lately, you would probably have noticed the broken traffic lights at the main intersection, which flash red for a couple of hours every day. You won't find me complaining, because there are now far less hawkers in the road, and the traffic actually seems to flow a hell of a lot better than it did with the robots working. However, for the guy in the wheelchair, those flashing lights spell disaster.
Put yourself in his shoes for a second here. It's bad enough you're a disabled person, who earns a living by begging from motorists in your wheelchair. It's worse that you have to push yourself backwards for three kilometres up a vertical hill just to get to the busy intersection in the first place. Now, you have to contend with the sloppy municipality, who don't even have the decency to ensure the traffic lights are in working order!
Look closely - it's like a gay pride parade.Outrage! Without the predictability of the robot lights, it's far too hazardous for wheelchair guy to venture out in between lanes. He doesn't have a clue when cars are going to pull off, as everyone seems to edge constantly closer to the middle of the intersection, looking for a gap. How can he work like this? Because I assure you, the man is deeply concerned about health and safety regulations. He even wore a bright yellow car-guard vest once, for example, while he wheeled himself around rush hour traffic. Clearly he takes every precaution!
And the police? When the lights are broken, there should be someone directing traffic. There never is. No-no, if I was wheelchair guy I would be irate! Cursing and swearing that I'd spent an hour inching my way up the devilishly steep hill, only to find I wasn't able to get my wheelchair between the cars and other hawkers, beggars, newspaper sellers and pedestrians on the busy Pavilion intersection.
I've seen him sitting, angry and dejected by the side of the road. It's a heart-wrenching sight, knowing that he can't get out into the middle of the traffic, and earn himself a living, and that he'll be going hungry that night. What is this world coming to, when the idiots that control the municipality prevent a disabled man from earning his wages!
Wheelchair guy, hang in there buddy. The government will get it's act together soon, and sort out those traffic lights. It won't be long.
