Pattern Forming

Pattern Forming
Submitted by Kiddles on Sunday, December 24, 2006 - 18:43

Well, I happened to stumble upon this site in a completely sober state of mind, unlike some of the stumbling I have done in recent years, months, days... actually from what I call a divine intervention, by clicking on the links listed in goldfishlive.com, then clicking on their links, then the links of theirs, I found here, a definite sign of a greater good.

Having browsed a couple of stories, I came across the memorium of Luca. I did not know him, living in PMB I think I'm excused, but by the posts made by you guys I can see that he was well loved.

But....

There is always a but...

Doesn't this spark some memory chips up in the good old mind of a past similar incident. Some say drunk, some say negligent driving, and some say women, but when Chas Smit, lead guitarist and back up vocals of the world known South African band Plush was tragically killed when he was run over after performing at a gig on tour, one can only start but to question.

How is this related to Luca, some distant links here and there, but the main point, or problem, is negligent driving!

We have all seen the efforts made by the "arrive alive" campaign. Don't speed, don't drink and drive, stop for old grannies and boy scouts, speed up for Australian cricket and rugby supporters, and still we have innocent lives being lost. We can not blame anyone but ourselves. We can try shift it onto the government but I'm sure they have it under control, after all, they did ZAP our minister of education into a very handsome minister of transport, at least he was educated, I think.

No, the main problem lies with ourselves. Take a moment to scroll to the beginning of this article, about my drunken state. Hell I'm not going to stop, its fun! But now things are getting out of control.

I can't drive, due to waiting lines at the licensing department (but that's another blog), and thus have been reliant on the much appreciated older sister. Now, PMB is a small village, so walking is the most economical way of transport, R5 for a street burger from KFC far out weighs a liter of petrol. So here I was, hitting the mall, or large supermarket hard. And to my absolute horror and outrage, "DONT DRINK AND WALK!" What have the streets become, when a citizen can no longer walk home drunk let alone drive?

I can rage about this for much longer, about dreaded accidents and horrors and other "simple problems," but I would rather keep my breath for cooling my porridge.

Something needs to be done. This site speaks about making a change and waiting for our beloved country to turn around, now we have a basic opportunity to do just that. For fak sakes stop drinking and driving and then maybe that sign will be lifted so that I can leave this musty Internet cafe and walk home.

Yup, it does suck. During a stint at Maritzburg varsity, I used to take the 'buddy bus' home, that was awesome! From town direct to the residences... what a pleasure.

Anyway, on the topic at hand, I think the root cause is our basic lack of respect for human life. In SA, we are faced with gruesome, violent crime and as a reaction, we tend to write-off the risk of drunk driving related accidents as a much less threatening problem to deal with. The mindset is "oh well, I could be murdered in bed tonight so why should I care if I've had 4 beers instead of 2..."

Just a theory.

Just out of interest...did anyone watch the 7 o'clock news tonight on sabc3...about that Road link bus completely riped in half long ways, right outside the Liberty mall, the very mall where I saw the "do not drink and walk sign!"

apparently he fell asleep at the wheel...
