Paintball / Speedball Durban North

Paintball / Speedball Durban North
Submitted by capdog on Sunday, October 22, 2006 - 21:09

What do you do when you need to get some solid teamwork in the workplace? Why, you take everyone down to the local paintball arena and shoot the bejeezus out of each other! Nothing strengthens work relationships quite like splattering multi colored paint over your co-workers.

I suppose it's better than being at the office, but the concept of these “team building” exercises always makes me laugh.

Anyhow, questionable company policy aside, this particular arena is based in Durban North, right next to the new Varsity College. I was a bit surprised to see how small it is - instead of a big open ground with a building in the middle (like the old Point Road arena), it's about the size of four tennis courts.

Apparently it's called “speedball”, and it's designed to be fast and exciting which is why the playing field is so small. There are plenty of authentic obstacles which give it that perfect Half-Life 2 kinda feel (yes I'm aware that I'm comparing real life to a video game..), with barrels and tyres piled shoulder height every few meters.

Picking up a paintball gun is loads of fun no matter where there arena is, but I can't help but feel the old-school outdoorsy ones are better. I prefer the slower, more calculated and careful form of the game to the carnage that happens on the speedball track. My favorite parts were always the sneaking through bushes, and inching around indoor corners in absolute silence, with your heart beating out your chest. The suspense is better than the all-out battle.

The usual problem with misty goggles ruining your game are amplified on the speedball arena, because you're moving so fast that the sweat literally starts to fill up the inside of your mask! Not so cool when you're facing the light – in fact after game one we realised what a huge advantage it was to have the spot lights behind you, and adjusted our strategy accordingly. It's impossible to see the enemy when the mist on your mask is beading up, and you're staring into a massive tennis floodlight!

Just a piece of advice if you feel like giving it a bash: watch those legs. Warm them up, stretch and do a five minute run before you even think of going into the arena! This is because you spend the entire hour session running on your haunches, in order to keep down out of the firing line and behind the barrels.

For the five days after the match, the office was full of many limping, aching legs. Excruciating pain, almost like a constant dead-leg, all over your thighs. You've been warned!

Anyone remember that one that used to be in westville north?
I'm talking years ago now since I was last there, but was an outdoor one in the bushes, lots of space, diff courses and the lot, but shit on a pie, yes, STRETCH!!

I remember one occasion when we went (also a company spirit building doodaa)was the best idea ever, coz all the old fogies in management took the rest of the week off as they were so buggered, which left us little chicks to run the roost at work. Good times, good times!

Yo,having played paintballs quit a bit,in the past,i can also say that the whole out in the push scene is much better, and requires much more skill, than these stupid little arenas,i c most places have turned 2 making these small 'speed ball' arenas.although these can be fun,'and i take it they are easyier 2 maintain'.these speed ball arenas have taken the skill out of the game, now days the winning team, is the one who's guns can shoot the fastest, and not the team with the most skill.

I have experienced all types of paintball. The speedball ones suck as they are just a shoot 'em up. The bush ones arent that cool either cause everytime you shoot there is some branch that deflects your bullet plus you ALWAYS know where your oppositon are but cannot shoot them cause of the all the obstructions.

The point road one is definately the best as you could move indoors or outdoors and also climb a storey or two to scout the oppostion and provide intelligence to other members of your ground team. The area is very large and you never really knew where your oppositon were. Hence there would be long periods of strategic stalking and positoning prior to a battle.

I actually recall playing with ''Capdog'' and some of his mates back in 1997 where I lost control of my bladder for a moment....I wont say how old i was at the time.

I remember that huge course out near pinetown. It was run by some hardcore okes who lived to drink and play some 'ball. I actually was in a competition team at that stage, but we were these tiny high school kids playing in this huge bush range against okes who were probably former reccies. We always came pipe!
