Essenwood Fire

Essenwood Fire
Submitted by capdog on Friday, February 24, 2006 - 10:59

Essenwood park on a Thursday night was once a hive of activity, as every fire juggler and bongo drummer in Durbs would convene for a few hours of entertainment. There were always a few kids running around playing, candlelit couples with picnic blankets, families and hippies mixing together enjoying the vibe. Whatever happened to this tradition? It seems as though people are sticking to indoor activities like DSTV these days.

Last night we tried to rekindle the old flame (love the bad puns), and organised a few people for a reunion. There were a few bongo drums and even a drunken hobo from Joburg who decided to make his own drum by turning the bin upside down! He wasn't too bad actually.

I met a dude named Gavin who came round after his juggling club meeting, he was doing a routine with three fire clubs, and it looked amazing! This guy had serious skill, you've gotta see it to believe it. I'll try get a video next week!

The other props were my fire flowersticks and fire poi. Wes is also freakin' good with poi but apparently not so sharp on the photography, because he managed to get 50 blurred photos of me. It wasn't that I was moving too much, it was YOU, I know that now because the entire background is blurred you chop! Never mind I still love you!

I snapped about 145 photos and here are the best ones for your viewing pleasure! As per usual, click the images to load the large version!

Yes, we are available for rent. Forgot to mention that. So if you have a private function and want some fire juggling at the very reasonable rate of a case of beers, send me a message! Email! Smoke signals!

Props include fire staff, flowerstick, poi, clubs (if Gavin is keen although he may cost a bit more) and firebreathing (ditto - you have to pay Wes before he puts it in his mouth) :)

Hey,

Just came across this by chance. Been trying to find some guys (or gals) that could help out at a friend's wedding in December.

It's going to be on the beach on the North Coast and they're looking for some fire daaaaaaancers to entertain the guests while the reception area is cleared for the after-party, so-to-speak ;)

If you're interested or know of anyone else who might be able to help us, please drop me an email at bhindiboo@yahoo.co.uk

Shot bru!

I never realised there was a market for people who want lessons... hmm maybe worth investigating...

Hi Capdog

Im getting married on the 29th of March this year and Ive always loved fire dancing and Jembe drums. My fiance and I went to the stables last night and bought drums from the drumshack especially for splashy fenn. Were just begginers but u have to start somewhere hey. Are you guys going to splashy?

What I wanted to ask was would you be availble to dance at the reception and if you could please organise a few mates who can drum really well on the jembes to play while you guys dance. We are going to have about 180 guests so it will be really good advertising, plus we have loads of hooligan friends who have lots of parties and functions etc. For example the MD of Mr Price will be there. Just let me know what you charge and we are willing to pay, plus you are welcome to come and join the party after dinner.

Look forward to hearing from you
Leigh Ingram aka Supafoxx

ok ok, so i should have taken pics and submitted this as a new article

the only reason i'm posting under this thread is the FIRE connection

A large warehouse/factory complex burnt down across the road from where i work this morning [Pinetown], the thing is still burning/smouldering, lots of smoke pouring out !

hectic way to start my day, half of these huge warehouse buildings had collapsed by the time i drove past- check the TV news, cause we saw the camera crews in full effect

Durban factory destroyed in fire

December 06 2006 at 10:20AM

By Miranda Andrew

At least one worker suffered first-degree burns to his arms when a Pinetown textile factory burnt to the ground on Wednesday morning.

Metro Police spokesperson Superintendent Alec Wright said traffic had to be diverted around the factory in Caversham Road, near Gelofte Ho ërskool, while firefighters tackled the blaze.

The fire is believed to have started at around 4am at Connacher Textile Factory. Zibuse Ngcece, divisional commander for the eThekwini fire department, said the building was completely destroyed. Ngcece said his department would investigate to determine the cause of the fire.

However, residents living nearby blamed the fire on the neglect of the factory.

They claimed there was always rubble lying around and said staff had not been taking care of the building.

I saw a moerse column of smoke on Monday morning when I came into town from Pinetown after wrestling with Home Affairs (which is another speech altogether) - anyone know what that was about? Seemed like it was down on the flatlands, might even have been refinery-related.

A fire in a small Spoornet Storage facility in the harbour area, no major damage to infrastruture and not a refinery

a few years ago i met a lady who gave lessons in poi and fire dancing at Essonwood park, Musgrave.

I would like to restart these lessons but don't know any contact details. Are they still giving the lessons there? somewhere else? where do i buy new poi ?

If someone could reply it would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Vanessa

Sorry to respond so late about this one, won't even begin to tell the tale of how the computer gave up on its quest to love and obey its master...

the lady you're looking for is Tina Tusker. She is (or was) responsible for pretty much every thing good and fiery that ever happened at essenwood. I don't know if she still does the lessons, but its worth a try. I'm mates with her son, Lew. I'll pm you his number and you can try him.

we can't have you sitting still now, can we?
