I had the pleasure of eating at Green Mango the other week, on 9th Avenue at the Spar centre. It's a slightly unconventional combination of Thai and Japanese, but that certainly doesn't affect the quality of either of the two culinary streams. And the sushi is simply amazing.
Now I admit I'm fully addicted to sushi, but that doesn't mean that all sushi is good enough to satisfy the hunger. There's some real warm, soggy stuff out there that is just awful to get through. You know the kind: watery rice crumbling to pieces and old, stale fish... I would name and shame a certain fish restaurant that has a very dodgy branch in the Pavilion, but I fancy giving their other branch a go before writing them off completely!
Thankfully, Green Mango is pure quality, an opinion shared by my Japanese friend who has been visiting Durban for the last few weeks. Having lived and breathed sushi in Japan for most of her life, a solid thumbs up is a great compliment to a restaurant re-creating this foreign tradition in Durban.
The most depressing part of the whole adventure is of course, the price. Green Mango doesn't do half-price nights, and although it's prices are on a par with what you'd expect to pay at other similar places in the city, there's no chance of me filling my belly with anything less than R160 worth of sushi.
It's an expensive addiction, but one that I have no intention of giving up, at least, as long as great restaurants like Mango are providing top quality chow. Check it out.
