FREE STUFF!!!

FREE STUFF!!!
Submitted by capdog on Friday, February 17, 2006 - 13:00

Yeah right!Yeah right!Got this today:

Dear All,
You may wish to add another mobile to your wardrobe
Nokia Is Giving Away Phones For "FREE"!! Nokia is trying word-of-mouth advertising to introduce its products. And the reward you receive for advertising for them is a phone free of cost!

To receive your free phone all you need to do is send this email out to 8 people (for a free Nokia 6210) or to 20 people (for a free Nokia WAP).
Within 2 weeks you will receive a free phone.

(They contact you via your email address).

You must send a copy to nokiaworld@mail2gsm.com

Kind Regards,
Trudie Luscombe

These email forwarding-for-free-stuff scams have got to be the most annoying freakin' thing in the whole world. Why do people believe that they'll get free stuff if they send out masses of emails? It is simply NOT TRUE!!! Let me tell you in a nutshell how to go about proving that it's garbage.

Start by looking on the company's web page. In this case, www.nokia.com. Notice how they mention nothing about any email promotions? That's because no such promotion exists.

Next, search google with the following terms: “nokia free phone email forward" and note how the exact email comes up in many search items. Choose one. In this example, I clicked http://antivirus.about.com/od/emailhoaxes/p/freenokia.htm. It shows a copy of the exact email hoax with an explanation and official company statement from Nokia saying that it's rubbish. I mean, it's not even a recent phone for fuck sakes! 6210 is ancient!

Then, note the email address that they want you to copy the message to. Goto the website associated with the address, namely www.mail2gsm.com. What's the first thing you notice? Why, it's got nothing to do with Nokia or Nu-Metro! "How can that be?!" you cry! In fact, it's a free email service, just like Hotmail or Yahoo. WHAT are the chances that Nokia has decided to give out free phones by getting people to forward mails to a free email box? ZERO!! ZILTCH!!!

“Now capdog...", you may ask, “Why do you get so angry about this? Just delete the mails and get on with life!"

I will tell you why. Because the only thing I hate more than mass-forward-for-free-stuff emails is SPAM. And this is exactly what is going on here. Some pricks set up the free email account so they can collect YOUR email addresses and sell them to PORN companies to send you masses of unwanted mail advertising penis enlargements and rolex watches. So everytime someone forwards this email to eight friends, this dick has another eight addresses to sell at $1 each. Yes, it's true, now you know!

These bastards now have my email address to do with as they please. Thank you very much!

Every time I get one of those e-mails I look up the scam on breakthechain.org and forward the relevant info to everyone (there it is, dated 2003!). Does it help? Probably not :-/
