Many people drive along Old Main Road in Hillcrest without even realising that every time they do, they pass a castle. Between the Heritage market and the Pinetown on-ramp, sits a castle that hosts not only the incredible “Glass Magic” studio that used to be based in Windermere Road, but also home to the owner, Cornel van der Watt. Cornel's glassblowing skill reveals artworks of glass figurines, custom chandeliers, lamps and even functional art like plates.
On Saturday the 9th of August, “Glass Magic Castle” hosted a long awaited event for all those who are sick of having nothing to do in Hillcrest but visit yuppie pubs, restaurants and cheesy dance clubs. Australian group, Veeva Feeva, blew our minds with 2 brilliant sets of their unique mix of reggae and funk-rock.
The four piece group consists of Kim Lumsdaine (Bass), Lee Cummings (Drums), Eddie Donato (Guitars / Vocals) and Elise Adlam (Vocals / Percussion). I think the trumpet player was from Durban, but never got his name (sorry). The interesting thing is that Lee used to be the drummer of the well renowned group THC. After returning home to Australia for about 3 years, him and some surfer mates formed Veeva Feeva. After checking out their site http://www.veevafeeva.com, and reading the following extract, I understood why, when listening to them, they reminded me of so many other styles of music that I love.
“Fuelled by their love of groovy funk, reggae, acid jazz, rock, roots, house and world music, VEEVA FEEVA have created a dynamic new feel that many have described as “People Music” – real, fresh and uncomplicated songs to make you dance and feel alive.”
During the show, the band's collaborative nature brought upon guest performances with other diverse musicians such as THC's Andrew Loubser on the Djembe, and freestyle rapping by the up and coming female MC, “Loopy”. DJ's before, during and after the show included Paperboy with Dub/Reggae/Drum and Bass, and Lee (Lightworx) with an interesting variation of progressive/psychedelic trance.
The outside area, well decorated with suspended fabric and artwork, provided 2 fires and a constant drum circle for those wanting to be part of the music. Drink prices were a bit out of line, paying R10 for local beer, and R15 for a glass of wine, not to mention the R5 deposit on the wine glass! The food looked great though, prepared by Zen and Yo. I never got to chow any (broke from the price of drinks), but it smelt damn good, from Thai curry bunny chows to spring rolls.
The good news is that you will all get a chance to experience this first hand because Cornel has lots in mind for this gem of a venue. He'll be hosting Veeva Feeva again on Saturday, September 9th and on the 15th, guitar legend Steve Fataar (the flames) and his daughter, Tara, will perform some of their very special, exclusive tracks. There's even talk of regular film evenings coming up in the near future, so all registered users be sure to check your mail!
I recommend checking out the Castle during the day (24a Old Main Road, Hillcrest). I haven't yet, but based on the old studio its bound to mystify you for hours. Keep your eyes and ears open for more going down at this truly awesome venue.
