Battle Vir Woodstock Report

Battle Vir Woodstock Report
Submitted by capdog on Sunday, August 13, 2006 - 17:55

Veeva FeevaVeeva FeevaPassenger were the victors in last night's competition, rightly so as they've worked incredibly hard at their music and will be great representatives for Durban at the semi-finals in Pretoria. The event was pretty well attended, but several incidents involving the organisers were a bit ridiculous to say the least.

A friend of mine told me how she was rudely crapped out by the little bald chick who was doing the presenting, and ironically also judging professionalism of the bands. BaldChick saw my friend talking to one of the band members at the door, and saw that the band member was explaining the competition and handing a flyer to her so she could cast a vote. This obviously pissed BaldChick off, as she started laying into the band member in front of everyone, threatening that the band in question would be disqualified if this nonsense continued!

Now my mate and the band member are good friends! She was simply trying to find out how the competition was working and how it would be possible to cast her vote. Who the hell is BaldChick to start ranting and raving at them, especially since she doesn't have a clue what their relationship was, and in any case is supposed to be representing her organisation not going bananas in front of paying clubbers.

Another good friend of mine, who works with one of the bands told me how he also experienced massive rudeness on the part of Authentic Ideas. He was on the guest list and was in the club early on, but only went to get a stamp when he was asked to by a bouncer inside. Trying to convince BaldChick that he was part of the band staff (but not a musician) proved to be a bit more difficult than you'd have thought:

BaldChick: “I'm staff, and I don't know who YOU are!”

Mate: “But... but... my name is on the list, look! Here I am, part of the band! I've been here setting up and now I need to get a stamp!”

BaldChick (amongst much scoffing with her accomplice and other derogatory remarks): “Your band is going to be DISQUALIFIED if you guys don't shape up!”

Unbelievable. It's amazing she got time to do the show in between all the threatening of disqualification.

The irony is that the rulebook of the competition states that bands are being judged on their demeanour and professionalism, and are told to be courteous to the organisers! Ya right. I'm not saying there aren't two sides to every story, but you'd have to stretch the old imagination to try justify this kind of behaviour.

Right, I'll get back to that just now, but let's quickly talk about the bands. Veeva Feeva were pretty cool, not mind-blowing but kinda indie pop rock with a bit of INXS in the mix. It was a novelty because they're Australian, but other than that there wasn't too much that was memorable about them. Very radio-friendly type rock.

The Banx think they are Nirvana. Everything about them is Nirvana, from the mannerisms and voice of the lead singer, to the songs and riffs. He even looks exactly like Kurt Cobain. They played one of their own tracks for about 30 seconds before I realised it wasn't actually a cover of a Nirvana song. Now this may be your cup of tea, but it's certainly not mine.

Habit To were sensationally good and went all out with visual imagery; from video art projected on a big screen to body paint and big hairdos, they certainly looked the part. The music is a fusion of several styles, and their sounds are influenced by everything from classical jazz to those mathematical masters of timing, Tool. Michelle is always a joy to watch as she undergoes a metamorphosis from mild-mannered and soft spoken to a rock diva on stage! What a voice. I can't wait for the full length CD from these guys which should be out soon.

I've said so much about Passenger that it's difficult to come up with fresh compliments. I love their music, and they've literally been one of the hardest working Durban bands we've had in a while. It's all paid off, and there were people everywhere proudly displaying their support by wearing Passenger shirts and going off when they took to the stage. Great performance, and probably one of their last before they head off to London later this year.

The whole competition however is nothing more than a big marketing campaign for the sponsors, and I fail to see how it benefits anyone except themselves. Musical ability has squat to do with it, and the scary thing is they openly admit that in the rules! Bands are judged on their professionalism (hypocritically, as we saw last night) and not their songs or ability to keep a beat.

The amount of sponsor ass-kissing that went on was horrible, in between almost every song the vocalists would have to grovel to MK89, Blunt, TuksFM, Authentic Ideas, Woodstock and Look 'n Listen. There were massive billboards and posters everywhere, and numerous times we were all told how Woodstock was the best festival in the country. They made it seem that we should all be damn grateful that they were going out of their way to let the 'crap' bands in South Africa fight amongst each other for a place at their illustrious festival. This irks me, because Passenger deserve to play anywhere in the country based on their musical ability alone. I found the entire event to be quite condescending, to both the bands and the Durban crowd, most of whom can't afford to get to Hartebeespoort for Woodstock.

Obviously having a bit of airtime on MK89 / TuksFM, or a review in Blunt is a good thing, and I respect the companies for promoting SA music. However their attitude needs a slight adjustment.

When they come to Burn and subject us to their massive banners and overboard marketing campaign, it would be nice to see something of value being received by the bands and supporters. Yes, more than just handing out four-month-old Blunt magazines. As it stands, they've charged us high prices to see our local bands play for free, and get insulted by their representatives, while everyone is made to feel inferior to the greatness that is the amazing Joburg scene. What about some free tickets to the festival, or even better, why don't they organise a big greyhound bus to Woodstock so we can go check it out?

Blunt? Thanks for dumping your old stock on us. Do we look like recycling bins?
MK89? Who can seriously afford DSTV these days?
Woodstock? I'm going to Splashy, thanks very much.
TuksFM? Um, ya this is Durban my bru. We don't get that here.

Hey Cap,n

I agree! Who the hell do these companies think they are? I've been to several Woodstock's and while it's a cool festival, it's not exactly Big Day Out or Ozzfest so why be so condescending to Durban?

Saturday night was my first time at the new Burn and I wasn't too impressed overall.
Felt like a stranger!

Cool shot, I think you'll have to get used to NuBurn a bit, it's a lot more spacious.

Thunda.com was there on Saturday! Hows that for the changing times.

"NuBurn"
I think you've just coined a new term my friend!

IMO, it's insane from a club point of view. Big, clean, well-stocked bar, professional stage set up.

In terms of comparing it to the old Burn, and even Jamies before that:
It's so spread out you could theoretically not even bump into mates that are there on the same night as you. The stage area is not segregated enough from the adjacent bar area because the sound spills through to a degree where you have to really lean in to order a drink.

But the number one negative aspect for me? The many jocks cruising around doing at least one of the following:
1) Looking for a fight
2) Dissing the goths
3) Lecherously eyeing my girl (Quickest route to an atomic wedgie hombrés)
4) Shouting at their girlfriends like you would reprimand a do that's just shat on your bed.

In the 8 years+ I've been attending Burn/Jamies/Winston, I've never seen as many idiots as I did on Saturday night.

I reckon the posers will disappear after a while though... you can't fake being into Bhora, Passenger or Habit To!

I want a Coheed and Capdog t-shirt!!!

I can't take credit for the NuBurn phrase I'm afraid. Think I heard it first on DbnAlternative!

The pertinent issues, as you've mentioned, are being addressed. On quiet nights they close the downstairs area, so it seems fuller. I don't find it too loud downstairs, I thought it was about the same as the old main bar... maybe I'm wrong on this.

I've been over and over in my mind the issue of Burn attracting posers, and eventually decided that it can't be a bad thing. Like you say, they'll have to get into the music and be converted (it does happen), because you can't fake it otherwise!

The alternative scene needs to expand, and since new rockers don't appear out of thin air, it's important to try swing popular opinion in favour of Burn, even if it attracts some idiots, they'll get sorted out soon enough. The important thing is that some of the people that come, will be cool. And then local bands will have bigger audiences.

I've actually done a Burn article which will be published soon in print, was going to put it up here at about the same time.

You said they close downstairs when its quiet??? Firstly, Ive never seen this and secondly, why downstairs? what happens to the dancefloor? Upstairs if full of scene kids (no offense met, as alot of my friends hang out up there) but it seems like the more old school burn people hang out downstairs, and as always, on the dancefloor. Surely closing upstairs would create the right vibe downstairs....in my humble opinion.
Yeah... Go OZ, Im so stoked someone finally agrees with me about the new burn...it just aint the same! and how bout the jock fight outside as we left - with the bouncers doing nothing, and the carguard cheering "fight, fight" If Im looking for that kinda shit, Ill go to jock clubs, which btw, are cheaper to get in, and drinks are cheaper too! Its easy to say the music at burn is good, but atmosphere plays a big role too.

I think the night they closed downstairs was the Wednesday public holiday last week. I think they choose upstairs to stay open cause it's the smoking area (which Dave said he was going to enforce - not sure if that is happening or not), and it's got the pool tables i.e. $$$$ is made.

I also agree with you T., new Burn is definitely not the same, and I think there's a gap opened up in the market for a club similar to old Burn. Where no jocks or anyone not dressed in black would fear to tread, that kinda thing. Maybe that new place opening where Sideburn was will fill the gap?

Agree about the prices too, they aren't the cheapest anymore. They sit somewhere on the middle of the scale, with the drink special nights of 54 being the cheapest and clubs like Society and Panama being the most expensive.

Jees, I would think it would be a HUGE mistake to close the floor with the dancefloor, especially since, generally the music upstairs (the jukebox) is crap and repetitive.
Hmmm, I think Dave and co need to think carefully about things like that. I would leave if I couldnt dance to "my" music, and had to be subjected to Linkin Park repeated over and over upstairs!
(Downstairs is big enough to house the pool tables - as you walk in on the left...just an idea, you know, if they have to decide on which floor to close!)
But hey, I guess its a case of trial and error. It just seems the new burn was designed with "new" people in mind, rather than the old faithful souls that have been going for years (including Jamies)
Hmmmf!

Hehe, remember that I'm not 100% sure it was closed all night, it was just a passing comment by a friend of mine who went on the Wednesday, that the downstairs was closed. Maybe there was an electrical fault, or maybe the amps exploded and they couldn't open it? I don't know, so don't quote me on it.

We just assumed it was because they expected the club to be quiet, what with the day being a public holiday and everyone partying on Tuesday night.

I dont know, but there is something about Authentic that pisses me off. They seem to have this "houding" that they are the best in the business. Sure they put on woodstock, which one can say is a good festival, but defentiley not THE best. Thier bands stable at the moment, isn't "specatacular" and hardly any of them feature on the charts at the moment.

Unfortunetley I wasnt there on Sat, as much as I would have love to, so I can't really comment on the night

While i agree with the majority of your comments regarding the condescending nature of the sponsors, i personally feel that your opinions regarding the bands' performances were grossly biased and rather unfair.

Having been a Passenger fan myself for some time, I naturally voted for them on entrance to Burn. After watching their performance, however, I really regretted giving them my vote. And I am so sorry to say that. Their vocals were not up to their usual standard and they, in comparison to the other bands playing, bar Habit To whom I walked out on, had no stage presence. I was very disappointed.

On the other hand, however, I was hugely impressed with Veeva Feeva and The Banx. Veeva Feeva were a fun, light-hearted band and that was awesome to see for a change. The Banx, although there are similarities between them and Nirvana, are, by no means, trying to imitate the band. There is much that I could say in their defence, but then I may start to sound biased myself. But, in all honesty, the Durban crowd needs to lay off the "Banx-Nirvana" thing - they are a talented band and deserve to be seen so. I am not saying that you need to become a fan, but just appreciate that they are making music.

With that all said, it is important to note that I am aware that the competition was based purely on professionalism and not talent, and sadly I feel that that is the only reason why Passenger won on the night. It's so sad that the organisers have so little understanding of why the majority of people listen to music. But then, perhaps they do.

Once again, it comes down to personal opinion and taste.
I thought Passenger and Habit To were the stars of the night, and they, as usual, blew me away, while the other bands bored me.
Its something that cant really be debated...its a case of...
EACH TO HIS OWN really.
Its really cool to hear other peoples opinions of course, and thats why Im adding mine :-P
