Veeva FeevaPassenger were the victors in last night's competition, rightly so as they've worked incredibly hard at their music and will be great representatives for Durban at the semi-finals in Pretoria. The event was pretty well attended, but several incidents involving the organisers were a bit ridiculous to say the least.
A friend of mine told me how she was rudely crapped out by the little bald chick who was doing the presenting, and ironically also judging professionalism of the bands. BaldChick saw my friend talking to one of the band members at the door, and saw that the band member was explaining the competition and handing a flyer to her so she could cast a vote. This obviously pissed BaldChick off, as she started laying into the band member in front of everyone, threatening that the band in question would be disqualified if this nonsense continued!
Now my mate and the band member are good friends! She was simply trying to find out how the competition was working and how it would be possible to cast her vote. Who the hell is BaldChick to start ranting and raving at them, especially since she doesn't have a clue what their relationship was, and in any case is supposed to be representing her organisation not going bananas in front of paying clubbers.
Another good friend of mine, who works with one of the bands told me how he also experienced massive rudeness on the part of Authentic Ideas. He was on the guest list and was in the club early on, but only went to get a stamp when he was asked to by a bouncer inside. Trying to convince BaldChick that he was part of the band staff (but not a musician) proved to be a bit more difficult than you'd have thought:
BaldChick: “I'm staff, and I don't know who YOU are!”
Mate: “But... but... my name is on the list, look! Here I am, part of the band! I've been here setting up and now I need to get a stamp!”
BaldChick (amongst much scoffing with her accomplice and other derogatory remarks): “Your band is going to be DISQUALIFIED if you guys don't shape up!”
Unbelievable. It's amazing she got time to do the show in between all the threatening of disqualification.
The irony is that the rulebook of the competition states that bands are being judged on their demeanour and professionalism, and are told to be courteous to the organisers! Ya right. I'm not saying there aren't two sides to every story, but you'd have to stretch the old imagination to try justify this kind of behaviour.
Right, I'll get back to that just now, but let's quickly talk about the bands. Veeva Feeva were pretty cool, not mind-blowing but kinda indie pop rock with a bit of INXS in the mix. It was a novelty because they're Australian, but other than that there wasn't too much that was memorable about them. Very radio-friendly type rock.
The Banx think they are Nirvana. Everything about them is Nirvana, from the mannerisms and voice of the lead singer, to the songs and riffs. He even looks exactly like Kurt Cobain. They played one of their own tracks for about 30 seconds before I realised it wasn't actually a cover of a Nirvana song. Now this may be your cup of tea, but it's certainly not mine.
Habit To were sensationally good and went all out with visual imagery; from video art projected on a big screen to body paint and big hairdos, they certainly looked the part. The music is a fusion of several styles, and their sounds are influenced by everything from classical jazz to those mathematical masters of timing, Tool. Michelle is always a joy to watch as she undergoes a metamorphosis from mild-mannered and soft spoken to a rock diva on stage! What a voice. I can't wait for the full length CD from these guys which should be out soon.
I've said so much about Passenger that it's difficult to come up with fresh compliments. I love their music, and they've literally been one of the hardest working Durban bands we've had in a while. It's all paid off, and there were people everywhere proudly displaying their support by wearing Passenger shirts and going off when they took to the stage. Great performance, and probably one of their last before they head off to London later this year.
The whole competition however is nothing more than a big marketing campaign for the sponsors, and I fail to see how it benefits anyone except themselves. Musical ability has squat to do with it, and the scary thing is they openly admit that in the rules! Bands are judged on their professionalism (hypocritically, as we saw last night) and not their songs or ability to keep a beat.
The amount of sponsor ass-kissing that went on was horrible, in between almost every song the vocalists would have to grovel to MK89, Blunt, TuksFM, Authentic Ideas, Woodstock and Look 'n Listen. There were massive billboards and posters everywhere, and numerous times we were all told how Woodstock was the best festival in the country. They made it seem that we should all be damn grateful that they were going out of their way to let the 'crap' bands in South Africa fight amongst each other for a place at their illustrious festival. This irks me, because Passenger deserve to play anywhere in the country based on their musical ability alone. I found the entire event to be quite condescending, to both the bands and the Durban crowd, most of whom can't afford to get to Hartebeespoort for Woodstock.
Obviously having a bit of airtime on MK89 / TuksFM, or a review in Blunt is a good thing, and I respect the companies for promoting SA music. However their attitude needs a slight adjustment.
When they come to Burn and subject us to their massive banners and overboard marketing campaign, it would be nice to see something of value being received by the bands and supporters. Yes, more than just handing out four-month-old Blunt magazines. As it stands, they've charged us high prices to see our local bands play for free, and get insulted by their representatives, while everyone is made to feel inferior to the greatness that is the amazing Joburg scene. What about some free tickets to the festival, or even better, why don't they organise a big greyhound bus to Woodstock so we can go check it out?
Blunt? Thanks for dumping your old stock on us. Do we look like recycling bins?
MK89? Who can seriously afford DSTV these days?
Woodstock? I'm going to Splashy, thanks very much.
TuksFM? Um, ya this is Durban my bru. We don't get that here.
