The Uprisings Festival is finally here! This Saturday, Durban will host seventeen national bands during one massive party at The Wavehouse, Gateway.
With great acts such as The Rudimentals, Pestroy and Hog Hoggidy Hog, it’s seems slightly crazy that the organizers still refer to the festival as ‘underground’. However, when you consider the history behind the guys that put this together, it’s understandable that they still think of the show as being slightly more hardcore than just some money-spinning corporate event.
About six years ago, some of the fifteen year old dudes from Sibling Rivalry decided to throw a little shin-dig with a mere four bands performing, at what would come to be known as the ‘Punk Uprisings’. It turned into an annual event, and has been growing at a boggling rate over the last few years. The choice of venue has settled on Gateway, as they offer a great experience including the flow-rider and skate park, use of which is included in the ticket price!
Last year saw over 1000 people attending, and this year the number of tickets issued will be capped at the same number, so it’s best to get yours early!
The organisers have been known for their heroic promotion efforts, and it’s not uncommon for Uprisings stickers and posters to be plastered over every flat surface in Durban. Some of their favorite spots have been found to have layer-apon-layer of Uprisings posters dating back to the beginning of the festival!
One brave soul also took Burn to task recently, and cheekily parked a van on the road right outside the entrance to the club. The van was plastered with stickers for Uprisings, and even had a full size poster on the front windscreen. Needless to say, Burn was not impressed and promptly removed all the posters they could legally get their hands on! What we learn from this is that the organizers take their festival seriously, and will go to any length to promote the Punk Uprising!
As well as being a musical treat, the event promises to be really funny with Corne and Twakkie from “The Most Amazing Show"? presenting the bands and hopefully doing a few skits on stage. Their live performance is rumored to be streaks ahead of anything we’ve seen on TV, so it should be a riot.
I’ve been in contact with the organisers and I’ve got four spots on the guest list to give away to you guys! Since every competition has a lame question that must be answered, here’s ours:
Name one Durban band that will be performing at this year’s Uprisings...
The answer can be found on the Uprisings web site! Post your answer as a comment here, first four correct and unique answers (in other words, you can’t use a band name that’s been mentioned already) will be contacted via email and their names will be put on the list. Please don’t play if you won’t be able to make it. I’ll be checking up! GO!!
