Uprisings 2006

Uprisings 2006
Submitted by capdog on Monday, July 24, 2006 - 13:36

The Uprisings Festival is finally here! This Saturday, Durban will host seventeen national bands during one massive party at The Wavehouse, Gateway.

With great acts such as The Rudimentals, Pestroy and Hog Hoggidy Hog, it’s seems slightly crazy that the organizers still refer to the festival as ‘underground’. However, when you consider the history behind the guys that put this together, it’s understandable that they still think of the show as being slightly more hardcore than just some money-spinning corporate event.

About six years ago, some of the fifteen year old dudes from Sibling Rivalry decided to throw a little shin-dig with a mere four bands performing, at what would come to be known as the ‘Punk Uprisings’. It turned into an annual event, and has been growing at a boggling rate over the last few years. The choice of venue has settled on Gateway, as they offer a great experience including the flow-rider and skate park, use of which is included in the ticket price!

Last year saw over 1000 people attending, and this year the number of tickets issued will be capped at the same number, so it’s best to get yours early!

The organisers have been known for their heroic promotion efforts, and it’s not uncommon for Uprisings stickers and posters to be plastered over every flat surface in Durban. Some of their favorite spots have been found to have layer-apon-layer of Uprisings posters dating back to the beginning of the festival!

One brave soul also took Burn to task recently, and cheekily parked a van on the road right outside the entrance to the club. The van was plastered with stickers for Uprisings, and even had a full size poster on the front windscreen. Needless to say, Burn was not impressed and promptly removed all the posters they could legally get their hands on! What we learn from this is that the organizers take their festival seriously, and will go to any length to promote the Punk Uprising!

As well as being a musical treat, the event promises to be really funny with Corne and Twakkie from “The Most Amazing Show"? presenting the bands and hopefully doing a few skits on stage. Their live performance is rumored to be streaks ahead of anything we’ve seen on TV, so it should be a riot.

I’ve been in contact with the organisers and I’ve got four spots on the guest list to give away to you guys! Since every competition has a lame question that must be answered, here’s ours:

Name one Durban band that will be performing at this year’s Uprisings...

The answer can be found on the Uprisings web site! Post your answer as a comment here, first four correct and unique answers (in other words, you can’t use a band name that’s been mentioned already) will be contacted via email and their names will be put on the list. Please don’t play if you won’t be able to make it. I’ll be checking up! GO!!

Hope everyone had a good time! This year's event was really big, and very well organised. The crowd was quite young, but I think that a lot of the older crowd opted for The Narrow at Burn instead.

Durban's own Big Idea were amazing, really enjoyed their show. Where do these guys normally gig? I'd love to see some more of them.

Corne And Twakkie... freaking hilarious. Their show is just them being idiots on stage, but it's pure comedic gold. They started with a partly choreographed dance routine, then moved onto a news bulletin with some jokes, then they acted out "Romeo and Julio" which was brilliant. Corne stole one of the crowd member's cellphone and threw it into his pants for the whole show, and afterwards they walked through the crowd giving everyone hugs and affection. These guys are so much funnier in real life, especially Twakkie... his acting is superb.

I wanted to do a full report but I went home early cause I was sick... so if anyone has anything to add, or photos, send 'em... :)

Besides the fact that I felt about 20 years older than I am amongst those teeny boppers...seriously there were some kids there which made it a bit crap cos there were loads of areas where you couldnt go with a beer in your hand.
And rocking out in a shopping mall was kind wierd too.
Corne and Twakkie were hilarious...waaay better than on telly..i thought 'the most amazing show' was lame ass to be honest.

'Most amazing show' was lame, but the MTV skits I thought were classic. No plot whatsoever, but still funny.

Jissus, I drove down to that show! Dit was baie mooi.

I does'nt like the harder stuff, but that Durban band played at drie uur, they rap, Ek dink hulle is "Big Idea", het iemand my gese. Hulle was kwaai.

Daar was nogge band wat Reggae gepeel het, van die Kaap af. Hulle was vir my baie in die haak. Ek het beslis van hulle gehou. So 'n blonde harige wit kerel en 'n vet rasta, en 'n swart Jamaican kerel, en trompette. Ja-nee, hulle was gesellige luisterbaarheid.

No problemo! I'm not to familiar with the guys, I don't think he's Jamaican, probably S.African, although I could be wrong. The boy has talent though!

You're welcome to write in Afrikaans, rather do that than write in broken English!

Bring some of that Witblitz, I've always heard of it but never actually had some!
