In My Day - Eleven Nightclub

In My Day - Eleven Nightclub
Submitted by capdog on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 - 09:19

Situated in The Blue Heights Centre, Westville, Eleven nightclub was the successor to the very popular Private Universe under 18 club. The layout was very similar, and the crowd almost identical.

The critical difference was that unlike P.U., Eleven had a liquor license. And what a difference that made, especially since their policy was to allow anybody over the age of 16 entrance. Those that were between the ages of 16 and 18 simply had a different stamp, denying them the privilege of buying alcohol at the bar.

That's where your friend's older brother comes into the picture. Being under 18 myself when they first opened, I don't remember going to Eleven and NOT getting completely drunk on two Berninis and three Hunter's Golds.

Yep, Eleven was a gem in it's time and certainly the most action Westville has ever seen. They were eventually forced to close by the residents of Blue Heights flats whose bedroom walls were vibrating from the thumping rave tunes. A crying shame indeed.

Are there any over 16 clubs left these days? Or have the cops and parents wisened up?

That's crazy. I work in westville thesedays, and drove into that centre the other day, right through the parking lot in front of the PU/11 entrance. At first I didn't even realise, then I remembered those days... man, that was a long time ago. I remember getting super trashed there many a time, also only about 16, and always getting a ride home with somebody's dad - pissed off to be driving to westville to pick up a carload of drunken rowdy kids - with somebody always gripping his seat trying not to vomit and give the game away. Aaah, good times.

yep, sounds exactly like our adventures at 11. Sometimes we'd sleep at my one mate's house who lived round the corner, cause his parents let us walk home! Don't think that would be allowed these days.

You mentioned the stamp issue. Well, I remember a stamp hack that we used to implement. As soon as an older buddy got stamped, he used to run and meet us around the corner and transfer the wet stamp onto one of our wrists. Of course we ran the risk of them realising that it was backwards, but that didnt bother us at the time. Gosh, I cant belive I just remembered that. I just remembered those taxis we used to ride in. Remember them, the "DPG", "Scream", "DaWhip". Man we were cool. We should do an article on them!

For the record, I never rode in those taxis! I simply wasn't gangster enough to make the grade.

I do remember though. They used to take everyone to all the hangouts in a night, but never actually go into any of them. The taxi would pull up outside, music blaring, all the little gangsters stream out and pick a few fights before they cruised off to ultimately end up at Blue Lagoon or some other dodgy place! What were you thinking? ;)

I bet you did you bubblegum gangster you! We all did. At least once. I remember telling the old lady i was off to stay at someones house and hope that when she dropped me off the taxi wouldnt be there, cos then id be in real kak. We used to get so trashed. What were the drivers thinking, driving around a bunch of smashed lighties to jols that they arent even old enough to go into? That must have been like 1995/6?
