Love Jones Album Launch

Love Jones Album Launch
Submitted by capdog on Wednesday, April 5, 2006 - 08:31

In the last four days, three Durban bands have launched their albums! The one I missed was The City Bowl Mizers at Gateway on Saturday, which is a real downer because I love their music. On Monday night though we went to check out Love Jones at Wilson's Wharf, which was equally as impressive as Passenger's launch on Friday. In fact, I think it was exactly the same lighting rig that was used at Speaker Box.

I thought the show was really brilliant, Esjay especially has a beautiful voice and she's a phenomenal performer on stage. They managed to play for two hours with a slightly unusual twist – an intermission during which a DJ carried his equipment on stage and remixed some of their songs. It was cool but perhaps a bit of warning would be good next time, as quite a few people assumed the show was over and the crowd definitely looked a lot leaner in the second half of the set.

View From Wilson's WharfView From Wilson's WharfThe music is excellent, it's basically soft rock with a catchy, poppy sound to it. Not my normal taste, but as I was a huge fan of The Cranberries and Alanis Morrissette in my younger years (yes, I can sing every word from Jagged Little Pill...), I appreciate it for just being what it is, well written, tight, and highly entertaining when performed live.

I had every intention of buying a CD to give it a proper listen, but they were on sale for R100, which was a bit steep I thought, seeing as it WAS the launch and it should be at least a little cheaper than a top-40 imported disc! Passenger's album was R50! So anyway, sorry guys I simply didn't have enough cash on me. Next time.

Catch them at Splashy, on the Main Stage with Dopescape Suicide, Passenger and Hokum on Thursday night.

You would have bought it if you had cash on you, "BUT YOU STILL THINK ITS EXPENSIVE. Dude a R100 in to days world that is nothing, you could go out and drink that out with out blinking an eye. Do you the almighty Cap Dog have any idea how much it cost to record, print, pay for designs, and all the other bull shit thats involved. These guys have spent the money to get a proper package together.and are footing the bill them selves. do you have any idea how many albums they have to sell just to get that cash back befor they even make some sort of profit. Passenger made it cheap for there launch but i garentee you it wont be that cheap all the time. I know the studio they recorded in and its not cheap. no less than R40000.00 just to record with nothing else involved. do the sums.

Point taken, I guess after going to Passenger's launch and buying an album that I really wanted for 50 bucks, I was a bit bummed to find that Love Jones was asking twice as much for an album that I didn't want as much (but still was willing to pay for - don't forget).

So my point is it was expensive for a launch, at least sell the album at a reduced price for that one event.

I do think R100 is reasonable for an album, even R130 if you buy it from a shop like Look & Listen who will take a cut too.

It is peanuts, but it's also economics. If you can buy your favorite bag of Simba chips for R3 from Checkers, you can't help but feel ripped off when Woolworths charges R9 for the same product. Even if the chips are worth R9 and Checkers is making a loss.

Ever heard the expression "cheap as chips"? It was meant to be a witty analogy.

I agree with Capdog; they could have launched it at a priveledged price.
Most CD launches I've been to have done that.

Recording is expensive, but manufacturing and printing CD's isn't.

It's not really about the money though is it. For example if Lowprofile had to have a cd launch and wanted a 100 sheckels i would pay it with a smile, however i would'nt part with a bag of chips for a Love Jones CD.
