In the last four days, three Durban bands have launched their albums! The one I missed was The City Bowl Mizers at Gateway on Saturday, which is a real downer because I love their music. On Monday night though we went to check out Love Jones at Wilson's Wharf, which was equally as impressive as Passenger's launch on Friday. In fact, I think it was exactly the same lighting rig that was used at Speaker Box.
I thought the show was really brilliant, Esjay especially has a beautiful voice and she's a phenomenal performer on stage. They managed to play for two hours with a slightly unusual twist – an intermission during which a DJ carried his equipment on stage and remixed some of their songs. It was cool but perhaps a bit of warning would be good next time, as quite a few people assumed the show was over and the crowd definitely looked a lot leaner in the second half of the set.
View From Wilson's WharfThe music is excellent, it's basically soft rock with a catchy, poppy sound to it. Not my normal taste, but as I was a huge fan of The Cranberries and Alanis Morrissette in my younger years (yes, I can sing every word from Jagged Little Pill...), I appreciate it for just being what it is, well written, tight, and highly entertaining when performed live.
I had every intention of buying a CD to give it a proper listen, but they were on sale for R100, which was a bit steep I thought, seeing as it WAS the launch and it should be at least a little cheaper than a top-40 imported disc! Passenger's album was R50! So anyway, sorry guys I simply didn't have enough cash on me. Next time.
Catch them at Splashy, on the Main Stage with Dopescape Suicide, Passenger and Hokum on Thursday night.
