Colab 2006

Colab 2006
Submitted by capdog on Monday, March 27, 2006 - 10:50

Hey everyone, sorry for the lack of updates last week! It was a busy one for me, and not having access to the interweb at home doesn't help the situation any. Of course, just because I'm busy doesn't stop any of you guys from writing! So shape up! :)

Tuesday was Human Rights day, and to celebrate we exercised our right to go to King's Park, get drunk in the sun at 1pm and mock the cheesy Canadian outfit “Simple Plan" at the top of our voices. Colab is the name of this new annual event, it's basically the first tour of it's kind in South Africa featuring prominent international bands. This year we had: The Rasmus, Seether, Collective Soul, Simple Plan and Metallica!

The stage and sound was by far the best quality I'd ever seen, and the bands really lived up to the hype. The seemed to have sorted out the problems that plagued the Joburg event, and even though there was a long queue for beer at certain times, the longest I heard someone wait for was about an hour.

The security wasn't very tight between the different areas, as two of our mates who only had grandstand tickets were able to simply borrow our ticket stubs in order to get past the guards and onto the grassed standing area! Then, we all managed to wrangle our way into the golden circle (more like golden half-the-field) where we watched all the headliners.

I heard some funny stories from my mates who were watching from backstage (lucky bastards), they said the guys from Metallica psych each other up just before the gig by standing in a closed ring and grunting and barking at each other, and then dropping and doing fifteen pushups! Classic. I also thought it was really weird the way they referred to themselves in the third person, as if the band was something greater than simply the four mortals who performed the music. Some good lines:

“Metallica is pleased to be here today!"

“Metallica would now like you all to put your hands in the air!"

And they are old. REALLY old. Retirement age. Plus, (I'm gonna get crucified for this one, but here goes) the only songs of theirs I like come from the Black album. The rest of their stuff just doesn't do it for me, sorry to all you hardcore fans out there but I think the long drawn out songs are a bit boring! So nyah! It was still a brilliant performance though and I enjoyed every second.

I also thought it was quite strange that James Hetfield talked in 3rd person... but in reality, Metallica, along with Pantera, are directly responsible for ALL contemporary radio metal so I suppose the band is greater than the sum of it's members.

I was pleasantly surprised/impressed with Simple Plan's stage presence and deeply disappointed by the lackluster show Seether put on. As Yusuf so rightly put it, "Saron Gas kicked Seether's arse".

Hey Capdog, see you at the execution ceremony!

I've never saw Saron Gas so I can't comment, and I agree Simple Plan's stage act was better, BUT I just can't stomach the lyrics and poppy hooks in their music! It's teenage-angst at it's worst.

True...
But I consider bands like Simple Plan. Blink 182 and Fallout Boy to be "gateway" bands that will eventually lead the commited few to Lagwagon, Millencolin, NOFX, Slick Shoes, The Lawrence Arms, Atreyu, Less Than Jake, No Use For A Name, Strung Out etc etc.

They have another purpose too... they steal radio air time from crap like Christina Aguilera.

I wouldn't put Simple Plan in the same category as Fall Out Boy and Blink!

A little insight on the Metallica thing from a fan, the whole 3rd person thing... (very hard to explain)(thinking) its not about an induvidual member in the band, its about the group as a whole and there fans. And as for the music, well in the 80's that is how things were done back then. And they pioneered most of the bands you listen to to day and pionered a whole generation of metal heads. I think you need to start going out more to enjoy your self, instead of going out to crit.

I still had a great time. It's just down to taste, and of course what era you are from. I grew up with Metallica Black, which is one of my all time favorite albums but I just can't get into the old skool stuff. I still admire them for creating the institution of metal as we know it!

I think Goldfinger put it best when they said, in their song The end of the day, "really, it's just music after all"

Once upon a time, a great fuck-off size ball of molten lava came hurtling out of the sky and wiped Durban off the map. Finish 'n klaar.

What d'you mean, it never happened?

The promoters of MyCoke Fest and Ampli5 seem to think it did.
Why else would South Africa's second-largest city be left outta the music festival loop once again?

Is this an issue worth getting het up about? (It may well be: this time round it's not Hoobastank and similarly cringeworthy acts that are playing - this time it's the Violent Femmes, Groove Armada and the Stanton Warriors, as well as a shit-hot line-up of locals.)

Knock me down, I'm done. Stick a fork in me. No, go on.

ja Its ultra crap if you ask me "daddy o"s why oh why? now i guess it's not really worth alot of bands and festy's to only have 2 gigs, so instead of throwing us fun starved durbanites a frikken bone, they have 2 gigs in Gauteing...
I guess most people in durbs dont really know who the stanton's are
but no excuse for the rest, sad thing is ticket sales would probably have sucked, once again in Durbs if that fest was pulling in here.
I think we pretty much stuffed for the future when it comes to fest's with intl stars

There's a gap here - not only for a production company to stage independent events of the Colab / Coke Fest / Ampli5 calibre in the coastal region, but also for a regional radio station that can fill the space being sorely neglected by the nationals.
I seem to recall there being some developments at ICASA involving greater availability of FM licenses, which may mean that an east-coast based station which targets the same demographic (14-35, independently-minded, up to date with global trends) could make name and that all-important crown. This in an area that, let's face it, has got a truly shocking shlock jock station situation in an unmentionable broadcaster who flies a red and yellow flag. A further situation exists in the majority of national and regional stations being shy of playing new local material, regardless of support bases on the ground. Mass media is tailored to suppress all but that which comes through the right channels, for which you can read 'is owned by the same holding company' or 'has enough money to pay its way onto the playlist'. Which is all yesterday's news. Boring.
Between Richards Bay and Port Edward there exists a substantial audience which prefers not to hear Celine Dion, Michael Buble or Bryan Adams. Ever. Yet nobody plays what they want to hear. Mind the gap? Somebody's gonna.
