Last weekend played host to the break-beat guru "GENERAL MIDI", a.k.a Paul Crossman, from Bristol, England. His visit began in the Cape, followed by a trip to Wilderness and Knysna and just recently Durban, where he has been welcomed with open arms. His experience thus far has been amazing as his first trip to Africa, and has impacted him in such a positive way that he promises to spread the word of the amazing geography, great food, interesting people & culture and warm hospitality to be expected here... most importantly to other heavyweights in the underground electronic movement.
So it stands to follow that the Durban leg of his SA tour at PANAMA ROOM last Saturday was a resounding success and blew up like mad with a bigger crowd (500 people) than your usual house evenings there. The dancefloor was perfectly packed until four in the morning, which in itself is unheard of in Durbs, and there was a constant array of hands up in the air and bellowing screams of joy from the crowd. The vibe was just awesome and reminded me of the days of the big 'raves' in the warehouses where an international such as Carl Cox would be playing and the crowd was cheerin' like crazy for this demon on the decks...
In the words of the General: "..Durban has set the bar really high for the upcoming events in Joburg and Cape Town..." and it was clear that he had a fantastic time playing and awesome response from the crowd. As the crowd was more or less 50% regulars of the 'Triphazard' events, and the other half regular club-goers in favour of house music it was a most interesting event with a cross-section of people. Educating a crowd like that is no easy task but the night proved that which is a long-overlooked phenomenon: that break-beat and electro deserves the kind of response from a crowd and popularity that house music attracts.
So impressed were the owners of Panama Room with the music, turnout and vibe that they requested for Triphazard Productions to start a monthly event there, and hopefully, with the marketing and credibility of Panama Room this will be a perfect opportunity to educate the public on breaks and electro and gain the momentum these alternative events deserve, and ultimately to host more top-class acts.
(BILLY NASTY - one of the most in-demand techno/electro DJs, and has performed at the most prestigious events, and infamous clubs – across the globe. As a result, he has been one of only a handful of more ‘underground’ DJs who has consistently featured in the annual DJ Mag Top 100. - coming to Durban in April)
