What a brilliant, excellent event at the Botanic Gardens, I will let the pics here tell the story!
Spoonfeedas opened and Freshly Ground rocked the audience of approx 6000+ people at the Botanic Gardens on Sunday 1 April, no April fool's jokes here! Perfect weather and THE BEST live SA band ever!
I would personally give that esteemed position to THE FLAMES, who in their day toured with the beach boys, who were probably one of the biggest acts of their time. And I mean that in the sense that who do you know that doesnt know the beach boys. Now thats huge dude, huge.
Ricky Fataar aged 11 on drums (who now plays with Bonnie Rait) and Blondie Chaplin (who now tours with the rolling stones)were both in the beach boys as well. Apparently ive heard (from my dad and other ballies) that the flames used to rock the esplanade hotel hard in those days, but alas the flames eventually broke up and the esplanade hotel became one of durbans legend jols. Fuck that place was such a landmark (you guessed it - RETRO'S). Anyway not to stray off the topic for to long but thats what i scheme anyway raaaaaiiit...

Best SA Band Ever? That's gotta be a poll, ay Capdog?
Personally my best ever would be Max Normal...no, no - BOO!...wait, maybe...aww feck, it's too difficult, make a poll there larney, gwan witya.
Hmmm, you've got a good point there, Cap. And in any case it's a rather subjective thing - for one person Watershed might, as far they're concerned, be the greatest band that ever walked onto a stage. We'll restrain our urge to strap them into a straightjacket for the time being. For another it could well be The Psycho Reptiles...whose fans would probably have their own straightjackets and be, for all we know, wearing them proudly at this very moment.
Bit of a minefield, really.
Nah dude..,cant be sayin that. What about our koeksister guzzling cousins? Im sorry but that shiat aint the bomb, im not gonna be tearing up any rug to dozi im afraid... anyway enough banter, id say my fave live sa band would have to be boo, pretty phat live act i must say, so sad they have broken up... wonder what ol chris chamelion will be like at da splash....
At Burn. Hmmm......
As for the THC comment, must be BarGo you were thinking of - I'm sure Obi Wan will be happy to hear that, he was one of the leading lights in that there bunch of skin-slapping nutters.
I remember the Bargo gig we did with perez, rocked hard. You know I didnt even think of THC when I spoke about the flames, maybe cos they were so kak. he he he. all jokes. But seriously I reckon they were way ahead of their time for SA. The full group was like 21 people including manager, driver and soundman on the first tour. It was fuckin madness I tell you. Four of us dyed our hair different colours at Terry Scotts on Musgrave rd(spilsy the bassists bally) for our tv interview on live at five. Dom was yellow, Scott was blue and Spilsy was green. Mine was flaming red when we left for JHB but by the time we had hit Cape Town it was more a washed out pink so I chopped a mohawk to keep the locals at bay. Last thing I wanted was pink hair in Cape Town of all places. Thinking about it now that was the tour we saw the Violent Femmes for free with free double jacks and red bulls, five of us got in with 2 tickets and a celphone. Eishta...
Reckon I should do a piece on the glory days or what people? Were some crazy times I tell ya...
STILL HAVE PLENTY THC CDS AVAILABLE IF ANYBODY WANTS... Mail me at thelappies@gmail.com...
