Are there any young South African males who are willing to be dragged off kicking and screaming by the women in their lives, to suffer a couple of hours of "chick flick"? Consider this a challenge gentlemen …
Brokeback Mountain … now I know it had to take second place to Crash in the Oscars … (no comment on that yet - still to be viewed) … but I was absolutely swept away by this movie! Bear in mind though that I am female and don't have the often encountered homophobia of my male counterparts … so that may explain why I enjoyed it so much.
If you can't deal with the scene in the pup tent (how did the photographer fit in there as well?) or on the stairs outside his apartment - then see this movie if only for the awe-inspring scenery (I believe it was filmed in Wyoming which has to be one of the most picturesque spots in the world!)
Seriously though … I thoroughly enjoyed the film not only for its ground-breaking content but its sensitivity and the very tasteful way in which the subject of gay love was dealt with. Well done Ang Lee on Best Director!
A final thought - It’s a sad indictment on society that a love like that had to be hidden for such a long time … and a pleasant thought that things have changed so much since those days!
