Splashy Fen 2008
Submitted by capdog on Friday, March 28, 2008 - 18:55

I know I usually do a full Splashy Fen review, but this year the guys and girls from Blunt magazine not only beat me to it, but wrote such a classic piece that I don't think I want to compete. There's even an awesome montage video! Check it out at Blunt magazine:

Jock Of The Boetsak
Submitted by capdog on Thursday, February 21, 2008 - 08:11

If you've ever been to Joe Cools or Casablanca, then you've probably encountered the common-or-household Jock. You know the type, with his puffed out sense of self-importance, calling everyone his boytjie and bugger while cracking raw eggs into his mouth. Some guys in London threw together this amateurish but still very funny spoof video of Durban jocks... enjoy!

How Many Of Your Friends Are Overseas?
Submitted by capdog on Tuesday, February 5, 2008 - 11:52

It always feels like too many, and until now it's been pretty hard to pin down an exact figure. That is, until Facebook came along and neatly organised our social lives for us.

Using an application and some manual data entry, I unleashed the inner geek and finally put an exact number to a question that has been nagging at me for a while: am I being left alone while everyone I know is partying up a storm in London?

The Arrows
Submitted by capdog on Monday, February 4, 2008 - 12:42

The Arrows are a spellbinding trio from Durbs that, for lack of a more inventive phrase, are seriously awesome. They bring a fresh sound and incredible talent to the stage in a very unassuming and fun-loving manner. I remember during their set at Burn, the lead singer and bassist transitioned into a little dance routine that had them jamming together like two characters from a musical.

It's this attitude that really shines through their songs: a happy, friendly and uninhibited vibe that infects the audience like a care-bear stare.

Kloof Gorge Nature Reserve

Kite SpiderKite SpiderThere are some amazing things to see in the Kloof Gorge! Here are some pics of spiders and a dung beetle that I took on a recent hike around the reserve.

Durban Beach Front 1997
Submitted by capdog on Wednesday, January 16, 2008 - 12:56

For nostalgia's sake, here's an old video I found on YouTube. It's footage from 1997 of North beach and a drive down to South, set rather appropriately to "Mr Jones" by the Counting Crows and "Zombie" by the Cranberries. Amazing that 1997 was over 10 years ago...

Durban Vibes
Submitted by capdog on Tuesday, January 15, 2008 - 18:06

Here's a new site called DurbanVibes.tv that offers image galleries and videos of Durban. It's not entirely clear why they do this, I imagine it's a type of online portfolio or tourism based site that will cater to visitors someday.

It's cleanly designed and has a bit of content on offer, with the promise of more to come.

Tofo, Mozambique
Submitted by capdog on Monday, January 14, 2008 - 13:26

Every South African should visit Mozambique at least once. The people, culture and lifestyle have the amazing effect of rejuvenating your perspective on life, while at the same time it's a great tropical paradise in which to kick back and chill for a couple of weeks.

We did the trip for a second time over New Year's and learnt a few new lessons about Tofo. And re-learnt some of the old ones. Here are a few fragmented pointers for when you're planning your adventure.

Umshini Wami
Submitted by capdog on Wednesday, December 12, 2007 - 16:39

Jacob Zuma has lost his machine gun, and he sings about it at every opportunity. Until now you may have only caught snippets of the song "Umshini Wami" on the news, and felt that you were missing out on a crucial part of history by not knowing this fine composition.

Luckily, I've managed to trace down the words and an MP3 of Umshini Wami, so you can sing along when they incorporate it into our national anthem next year! It goes a little something like this:

Street Kids
Submitted by capdog on Saturday, December 8, 2007 - 10:34

Here's some interesting videos produced by Umthombo, an organisation that helps street children.

It's narrated by kids from the UK who talk about their experiences of meeting Durban street children their own age, about sniffing glue, abuse, HIV and poverty from their perspective. Nothing too groundbreaking, but interesting nonetheless.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Bluff Residents
Submitted by capdog on Friday, December 7, 2007 - 06:49

Sitting on the grassy banks of Anstey's beach is a large red container with this sign clearly visible on the side.

"DANGER: Radioactive material. Do not remain in or near this area unnecessarily."

Just another reason not to hang around after your surf...

Zuma Is Coming, Like It Or Not
Submitted by capdog on Tuesday, November 27, 2007 - 08:55

So as you've probably heard by now, Zuma is leaps and bounds ahead of his competition in the presidency race, with the Women's League now also giving him their backing.

With so many people promising to leave South Africa if he ever gets the top job (seriously?!), I thought I'd jot down a few notes to fuel the debate, from the classic Spiegel interview to more moderate and rational analysis of his character. Will Zuma turn SA into Zimbabwe? Is it even possible against the backdrop of the new wealthy ANC businessmen?

Durban Surfing Videos
Submitted by capdog on Tuesday, November 6, 2007 - 18:09

Here are two awesome surfing videos from YouTube, one a general collection of Durban beach shots, and the other tow-in surfing from the big swell in March. Why can't we get more of these waves?! Enjoy.

White Mountain 2007 Review
Submitted by capdog on Monday, October 1, 2007 - 10:11

We're back from the second White Mountain festival which was a roaring success in every meaningful way: great music, chilled out vibes, warm fires, good facilities and bucketfuls of beer.

As promised, it was unlike the carnage of Splashy, instead more of a grown-up affair that never threatened to get out of control.

Great Balls Of Fire
Submitted by hedmekanik on Wednesday, September 19, 2007 - 11:22

Reports of a humongous fireball engulfing Durban’s Bluff area last night have set the city alight with conspiracy stories, gossip and rumour. It seems that for each citizen there is a different theory, each more bizarre than the last. And no, it wasn’t the Ethiopian Zion Coptic Church’s annual Bongfest. That was last Tuesday.
